About book Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women And Alcohol (2013)
From the moment I saw this book on display at Indigo, I was hooked. As the adult daughter of an alcoholic it was like this book was made especially for me.Ann Dowsett Johnston does a spectacular job of combining personal stories with statistical and psychological research, and rightly so, given her experience in journalism. I actually read it in one sitting, couldn't put it down.This book was informative, touching, sad, and very honest. I gave it 4/5 because I have a short attention span and it dragged a bit in places (I don't read a lot of non-fiction).I'd recommend it to anybody - male or female - who knows somebody struggling with alcoholism. It's not going to cure the problem, of course, but it's definitely a big step toward identifying and understanding exactly what the problem is. And that's not nothing. This is a beautifully written book, I felt connected to the stories of the women in this book and liked the different studies and facts it was very interesting. Athough there was not much of a variety of stories all the women in the book were upper middle class or upper class which is okay because we don't always get to hear stories about addiction from this point of view so it was probably so dispell the stereotype that addiction is a lower class problem. I found myself really relating to the author and appreciating her personal story and writing style. I hope she writes more books about women and/or addictions because she has a great talent for this. Excellent book.
