About book Drink, Play, F@#k: One Man's Search For Anything Across Ireland, Las Vegas, And Thailand (2009)

I thought this book had a good start. The pacing of the story was good, and while some of it was a bit excessive, it was still believable. Towards the end, it began to venture too far into the realm of fantasy with a heavy dose of 80's Rom-Com serendipitous ending. For a book that so eagerly looks for the acceptance of the frat-house type, it seems to try too hard to pander to the "Lifetime" movie watcher demographic towards the end of it. It's almost as if the author got a sudden attack of conscience halfway through the book and decided to backpedal out of the intensely chauvinistic corner he had painted himself into. I give it 3 stars for the funny, ballsy parody of book with a similar title that (ironically) took itself too seriously. I was confused. Was this supposed to be a satire matching up to Eat Pray Love or was this supposed to be stand-alone funny? The thing is, I read Eat Pray Love years ago and remember absolutely NOTHING. I usually remember. That was what I hated so much about the Gilbert book, it was so bad, the worst kind of bad, that it didn’t even register in my memory. I only remembered that it was hailed the most wholesome feel-good do-no-harm masterpiece of privilege and shallowness (okay, that’s not what it is hailed, but) and that I didn’t see why it was so popular. Other than that, I don’t remember anything. So I wasn’t sure what the point of this fictional account of someone traveling to three countries was. Was it to mock everything Gilbert said? To follow its format but not mock it, just be funny? No idea. Reading it was like one of those situations where everyone laughs at a joke and you laugh along too, even though you’re not quite sure you get it or are laughing for the right reasons. I laughed, every so often.
