I have been reading Todd McCaffrey's books in sequence and when I first began Dragongirl, I was dismayed to note the extremely negative reviews (I had not been pleased with the writing or cohesion of his previous books although I had enjoyed the stories). Having finished Dragongirl, however, I think it is his best effort so far. It still isn't on a level with Anne's work, but I am impressed with the improvement in his writing. And it was a riveting story. I can't tell you how many times I've read this series. Just read this title again, and it still doesn't disappoint. Telepathic dragons, strong female characters, great relationships, and the Harpers' guild and music as a strong guiding force. What could be better? In hindsight, I still enjoy reading the series in order written (versus actual chronological order of events). I especially like how McCaffrey shifts the point of view in different books, retelling the same events from someone else's perspective. I'm getting into the flow of Todd McCaffrey's writing style, and he's become more comfortable with a female perspective/thought process for his female characters' voices. On to the next Pern title!
