About book Double Delicious! (2010)

This book had some yummy looking recipes and fun ideas. I made a recipe by crossing the teriyaki chicken with the lo mein recipe and adding some visible veggies to that mix. It turned out really good. I think what bothers me most is that her whole goal seems to be to disguise the fruits and veggies. Hence the name of her first book, "Deceptively Delicious". She does this by adding veggie puree to everything. While I don't mind the idea of the veggie purees, I do think the idea that you have to hide healthy things in the foods for kids to eat it is a little annoying. The Lo Mein only had carrot puree in the sauce and no visible colors in the actual meal. I do like that she uses whole grains but using cream of whatever soup, albeit low sodium, does not a healthy dish make. Almost all her recipes say low sodium, low fat, or no salt added products suggesting that these make for healthier choices. However, things like low fat yogurt are loaded with extra sugar instead so this is not always a better option. Anyway, I think it might be a good transition book from a non-healthy menu to adding healthier things into the diet. Ultimately I think it is important to help kids learn to love veggies for their own goodness in the meal. Eventually they are going out on their own and you will no longer be able to "sneak" the healthy things in. I can cook too healthy sometimes. You know, so healthy it tastes "healthy". I trained myself to like the taste, while my boyfriend trained himself to deal with it. When we discuss dinner, he asks for "something like a home-cooked meal". Fat, sodium, calories... Double Delicious is our new compromise. I have to give additional props to her new video blog on DoItDelicious.com. Ridiculously awesome fast recipes (Cherry tomato pasta is our new fave). I'm going to see how creative I can get with making vegetarian versions of some things.

Great Ideas - Based on the "deceptions" as the 1st one, but some really good recipes.
