About book Dork Diaries 01. Nikkis (nicht Ganz So) Fabelhafte Welt (2009)
Fourteen-year old Nikki Maxwell is not happy when her father arranges a scholarship for her to attend a private middle school called Westchester Country Day. To make matters worse, she has a locker right next to the school's most popular girl, MacKenzie Hollister. MacKenzie labels Nikki as a "Dork" and goes out of her way to make Nikki’s life miserable. It looks like the new school may work out when Nikki befriends two other dorky girls, Chloe and Zoey. But, then Nikki enters a school art show and Mackenzie is her main competition. Will she win? This book was very readable, and while I think it had an ok message overall, getting there was torture for me. I found the main character intensely shallow and unlikable and the plot a yawnfest. Much of this is, I'm sure, because I'm not the intended audience and this book has very little reach in that arena. I'm sure a lot of tweens will relate to it, and it is wildly popular at our library, but I wouldn't feel especially good about suggesting it.
