About book Doomwyte, A Tale From Redwall (2000)

The Redwall series has been one of my favorites for a long time, and I was so excited to receive my signed copy of Doomwyte when it came out. The book was wonderful to read, but not quite as strong as previous Redwall books. I'm used to seeing Redwall's complex plot and engaging cast of characters, which didn't quite come with Doomwyte. The mysteries were more straightforward and the plot moved by easily. Still, it was a great book. I would recommend this, but I would recommend it before reading the other books - since the histories are easy to put together when reading out of order, it doesn't really impede the reader's understanding, but it does ensure that stronger books such as Marlfox and Outcast of Redwall are in a better position to impress. I'm saddened that this will be one of the last Redwall novels I'll ever read. Unfortunately, it continues the trend of derivative novels that has been the norm for so long. Welcome additions are different villain types (snakes/reptiles and birds), a good connection to older novels (Gonff and Asmodeus), and some bad behavior of some of the usually good woodland creatures (the Log-a-log). The book is a fun distraction and reminder of the best books from before.
