About book Divine Nanami 1 (2011)

A love that defies time itself. This series is just AMAZING! The humor in this story always makes me laugh and never fails to lighten my mood. The romance is sweet and perfectly paced. I also really liked the mythology and time travel aspects of this story. Very well thought out! We are given a few clues here and there, but only enough to wet my appetite before the final reveal.Nanami is a strong heroine which is really nice to see in a shoujo manga. I like that throughout the series Nanami gets to save the day and Tomoe even if things don't go as smoothly as they should. She is definitely no damsel in distress, but she isn't perfect either. She makes plenty of mistakes (some hilarious!), but what I admire about her is that she never gives up. Nanami has plenty of chances to just leave the shrine and do her own thing leaving the inhabitants to take care of their own problems, but she doesn't. She sticks by her friends and does whats right even when its not the easiest choice. Tomoe is a bit gruff and does his best to put Nanami off in the begining, but underneath that he really does care about Nanami and the shrine. He has been through a lot in the past and had his share of heartache, but with Nanami's help he is begining to open up a lot more, slowly, but surly. The romance is so sweet and not rushed at all. The characters actually start off hating each other, but given time they slowly become friends and learn to care for one another. Which really shows through in how much they try to help one another. This is an amazing story with plenty of humor and a dose or romance. I highly recommend this to fans of Shoujo Manga! Ahhh Kamisama Kiss... My love for you is endless.*NOTE: This review is going to be for books 1 though 12 since VIZ Media doesn't release the books any faster (grrrr...) and I'm too stubborn to read them online since they're SPECIAL.*Aigghttt so on to the review...I actually watched the anime before I read the books and loved it, but I wanted more. I was a bit scared to be disappointed but, luckily, read the books anyways. THANK GOD. The story gets much more depth to it and keeps you completely enthralled.Since you probably already read the synopsis, I'll keep the summary brief. Nanami, our main heroine, suddenly finds herself to be the tochigami (or land god) of a shrine. With becoming a tochigami, she also gets a shinshi (kind of like a helper/servant), Tomoe, though not without a huge fuss xD A lot of the story is dependent on the relationship between Nanami and Tomoe, since it is so interesting and hilarious but very touching at the same time. You will open your hearts up to them. Tomoe, with putting up a hostile front but secretly being very caring and Nanami, with being so sincere even though she doesn't always make the right decisions. While their relationship is one of the biggest pulls, there is a lot much more going on in the story. And I absolutely love that. So many times have I read mangas that are too dependent on the relationship between the characters that they start to feel a bit dull after a while. There is actually another huge plot (I think it might even be the main one), which is at this point in time unrelated to their relationship, slowly going on in the background. Oh that's another thing, this story doesn't fail to take it's time. But it does it WELL. It is extremely well paced and never leaves you bored. Suzuki(the mangaka) will bring in a side story or character arc at the exact right moment to keep you interested.Speaking of characters, this story has fantastic ones. You will find yourself loving every single character. That's right. Even the "bad guys". Julietta Suzuki has such a fantastic way of showing everyone's vulnerability. I find this extremely refreshing, but also a little bit frustrating at times since I cannot bring myself to hate "the enemy" (and oh my god I feel so contradicted and torn apart inside cause, like, that's what I'm supposed to do, right? I mean they're really really baadddd)So the bottom line is, read these books. They are brilliantly executed and will keep you wanting more and more. I feel like this series is too undervalued and, while my selfish heart wants to keep it all to myself, they deserve all the popularity and appreciation in the world. SO START READING! :)

I'm not sure what I think about this series. On the one hand, this is a very Shojo manga, and generally speaking, I'm not big on romance, whether it's Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett, or Nanami Momozono and Tomoe the shinshi. Still, there is something rather engaging about the series. Sure, the romance is pretty much set up from the very beginning (we just KNOW that Tomoe and Nanami are going to hook up eventually), and sure, he's an insufferable jerk, and she's a bit too prideful...Oh my goodness! She's got pride and he's go prejudice...Ack!Anyways, I'm not sure that this is going to be a favorite manga by any stretch of the imagination, but it's fun and sort of cute. Plus, I'm learning some Japanese terms, which is helpful. At least I am learning the difference situations that the require the use of "san", "kun", "sama", dono", and "danna" :)
