About book Die Wahrheit über Meinen Hintern: ... Und Andere Dinge, Die Nicht Im Buch Meines Exfreunds Stehen (German Edition) (2012)

Just to clarify, I'm giving it three stars not because I thought it was particularly spectacular, but because overall enjoyed it as a quick read. Probably 2.5 stars is more appropriate.I read this while recovering from wisdom teeth surgery. It was a quick, and somewhat humorous read. I agree at times the author was quite pitiable, and often drowned out her own insecurities by getting involved in bad or reckless decisions. What I enjoyed most about the novel was how through all of that she somehow managed to come around full circle and as well as to terms with herself, or at least learn to accept and deal with her flaws in a healthier manner.I don't understand all the hate and ignorance towards her insecurity in other reviews. I've met many women who mirror her insecurities. It's usually a byproduct of being raised by parents with ultra conservative attitudes towards sex and love, combined with a shortage of information or access to information to counteract them.If anything, I think she's quite brave for admitting her own ignorance and mistakes, and I don't necessarily blame her for looking back on it with a bit of humor at how ridiculous they were. If you're one of those people who grew up in a household with more progressive views towards women and love/sex, you should probably count your blessings that you grew up with knowledge, instead of having to waste years hating yourself and in unhealthy relationships to figure it out.Overall, I think this novel would be better geared towards teenagers or young women to encourage discussions about healthy and unhealthy relationships, dealing with insecurity, and learning to love yourself. I don't think many women in their mid/late 20s-early 30s like me will find it new or inspiring. I read this book as another in a long string of auto-biographies of female comedians/comedy writers. As I was unfamiliar with who Hilary Winston was, it took longer for me to warm up to her and her style of writing. For a book billed as non-fiction/humor, I didn't find it very humorous at all. I can say that there was only one line in the whole book that made me laugh out loud. The rest of the time I didn't really find her comedy style was to my taste, if indeed she was trying to be funny. A lot of her jokes were at the expense of her ex-boyfriends and therefor just sounded full of spite and bile.As a liberal minded woman, I did connect to some of her stories of dating and how difficult it can be, but in the end I always found myself not liking either party in her relationship stories. While she clearly has had awful luck with men, her actions and reactions were terrible as well and product of her oft professed low self esteem. While I enjoyed the book enough to finish it, I kept thinking how maybe some of my other friends might like it better.

Funny, honest, poignant. The author's style is so frank, you want to be her best friend.
