“The book of fate”, is written by Parinoush Saniee, and translated by Sara Khalili. It talks about fifty years in Iran. It took place in Qum and Tehran before and after the revolution. The main characters in the story are Massoumeh, Saiid, and Parvaneh. The story mainly talks about Massoumeh falling in love with Saiid at the age of 16. They get separated because of Massoumeh’s brothers, they wanted to kill Massoumeh and Saiid considering they accused them of bringing shame to her family. They arranged a marriage to her to a man she doesn’t know anything about. Then her husband gets arrested because of political dissident. When she’s in her fourty’s, she re-unites again with her lover. For the sake of her family, she leaves everything behind. I believe this book is a tragic romance. I liked about the book that it has a bit difficult words, and how the writer explains every detail. Like how Massoumeh felt the first time she saw Saiid. What I disliked about the story was, Massoumeh was thinking about her family and what people will say a lot. I chose the book because I love reading romantic stories. If it was a movie, I would definitely watch it. But reading the book makes me imagine them in my mind how I want them to look. It took me 22 days to finish the book, I read 20 pages a day. Sometimes I would read more, because I would be eager to know what will happen in the end. I loved this book! What an insightful look at life in Iran and the struggles of one woman. We take our lifestyle and freedom so for granted; this book illustrates how lucky we are! The only downfall was at times I felt the dialogue was long - especially some of the lectures to her children. I would recommend reading this story to anyone interested in seeing life through the eyes of an Iranian woman.
