About book Der Vergessene (2013)

A book with promise that dove-tails into your standard fantasy trope. It has some neat ideas but not enough for it to seperate itself from the pack To be completly frank this almost feels like a retelling of Robert Jordans Wheel of Time with a different mythos but the same story and pacing. This book took me well over a month to finish and for me that is an eternity, I never felt the desire to jump back in and finished it just so I could be done with it.Not bad but doesnt jump above its peers. The two words that kept popping into my head as I was thinking about how to describe this book were "meticulous" and "heart-felt". This was clearly a labor of love for the author, with lots of thought to plot movement and word choice. I usually read a book in 2 or 3 days, but I took my time with this one, reading a chapter or two every day, and at nearly 700 pages it took me a little over a month to finish. What surprised me was that I usually lose myself in a story, but this one started feeling more like a companion. Now that I'm done I kinda feel like a good friend has left town. This is very much epic fantasy in a classical sense. Many reviewers have noted this as the novel's detriment. But there are so many meaningful moments of emotional depth in here, and if you haven't, you should read Mr. Orullian's short story "The Sound of Broken Absolutes" found in Shawn Speakman's "Unfettered" anthology, which is *deeply* moving. I expect there will be a masterwork novel in one of the forthcoming installments of this series. To use a musical analogy: Beethoven's first symphony borrowed heavily from his Classical forebears, and was great, absolutely. But his 3rd symphony is mind-blowing to this day. Its for this reason that I truly look forward to Mr. Orullian's future offerings.

Nice start. Great world building. To many disconnects in the dialog.
