Translated from the Italian, this is a complex narrative, switching back and forth between various times and characters and places. It seems the Vatican kept through the centuries a detailed list of the worst crimes, as a display or tally of evil. This moves into modern life as a Milan policewoman tries to deal with the sudden death of her husband, who plunged off a building in Rome. She turns detective, running into a priest with amnesia who is tracking a serial killer, a rather nasty member of Interpol, and other assorted and quite real characters. This is all done quite skillfully, like a tapestry whose disparate threads,when all is revealed, made quite a picture. I think it helps that the policewoman, Sandra, is very finely drawn and the reader is firmly in her corner. Wow! Mysteries set in Italy are very popular right now, but this is not the aging Inspector Montalbano, the suave Guide Brunetti or the American ex-pat Alec Blume, the characters of Andrea Camilleri, Donna Leon and Conor Fitzgerald. Deep and dark, the twists in plot and time all make an unforgettable story which you'll think about for a long time. Vengeance and redemption are twined throughout this complex story.
