Sometimes bizarre, sometimes beautiful: this is the story of a rural Minnesota family facing the conflicts of the first world war and dealing with the consequences of their various secrets. I read it all eagerly and was enthralled with most of the characters and their experiences, yet I felt somewhat let down by the ending, which seemed both a little too pat and a lot out of place with the solid-ground realism of most of the book. Still, a good read. Book attracted me due to time and place it takes place, pre/post WWI and on a Minnesota farm.First chapter was dark and hits you hard. The use of supernatural in the plot was disappointing and unusual, and the last two chapters included a whole lot of events, when the rest of the book was slower paced. Seemed like the author just wanted to finish and get it over with.Not a total waste of time, it was an interesting read, but not something I'd recommend to others.
