About book Demi-Monde: Die Mission (2013)

The good: Ya gotta hand it to Mr. Rees - he certainly put a ton of thought into the world-building of the Demi-Monde. He also knows his history. The writing itself is easy to lose yourself in. Individual scenes are very immersive. The bad: Unfortunately, for all that thought the central premises - and most of the side-tenants as well - were still incredibly unbelievable. Not being able to suspend my disbelief for a single moment seriously detracted from my enjoyment of his book. There are huge plot holes and plenty of internal inconsistencies. The verdict: I'd like to read more of this author because I think he creates vivid images through his words, but I can't manage any more of this particular world. I think this is a good book, but average. I felt the author had set up some items, but never followed through with them. As a result, he never accomplished a great plot. Just average.I especially had a hard time with the character arc of Trixie, but I set aside my disbelief to see where he was going with it. That wasn't fully resolved in this book.I liked the book enough that I will try the second in the series and see if he had a better go at that one
