About book Dead Spots (2012)

I enjoyed this a lot, it's a fun read but I also got really involved in the story by the end of I was rooting for Scarelett all the way. It felt like a new take on the paranormal genre (which is always nice considering how over saturated it is) and I like that the origins story for the vamps, seres and witches was worked into the novel so well. A few things did annoy me- all the characters seem pretty appalling at investigating, considering how dangerous the killer is a lot of people don't seem particularly interested in finding him/her (looking at you dashiell-stupid name btw) and if physical evidence is unimportant because they can reconstruct it magically why don't they???A great start to the series- I've got high hopes for the next book.EDIT: the rest of the series thoroughly disappointed me all the faults of this book seem to get amplified, Scarlett doesn't grow as a character and the plot seems to rely more and more on coincidences, odd decisions from the characters and deus ex machina. The love triangle also carries on. I enjoyed this book quite a bit and look forward to reading more in the world. The brutal practicality of the vampires and werewolves fascinates me. There are no warm fuzzies in this world. Scarlett is a fairly flawed heroine, not atypical for this genre. I don't really feel any great love for her but I don't dislike her. I think I'm more fascinated with Jesse and Eli. I'd like to see them develop more than watching her grow up. She's had some tough stuff happen but I have to wonder how much was her and how much the outside forces. She's very naive overall--despite her bravado. Jesse said he'd seen police officers with her level of callousness and I think much of that is "fake it til you make it" more than her true self. She's not hard yet but could get there.
