I thought this was interesting enough...for a zombie story. It seems as if for a few years now I've heard of way too many books and movies with zombies. I usually steer clear of it all because after a while, it does become repetitive right? I've already read a book with a zombie detective and it was very colorful but I think I enjoyed reading this one more for some reason. I felt like I was watching an old black and white crime movie sometimes and if not for the mentions of modern technology, it could have easily fit in that realm. I'd give this four stars if not for the hints of romance or at least future romance toward the end of the book. I don't know if the sequel goes into that a bit more or not but I'll probably avoid it. True it is just a really small part of the story but I'm severely allergic to even a hint of romance. Also, I feel it drags a bit towards the end. It's a very dark, pessimistic sort of story. I think how you view the ending is dependent on whether or not you're a glass half full or a glass half empty kind of person The story of this book was captivating. I was held onto like only a good book can hold onto me, but I was not a fan of the characters. There was very little redeeming about Hessius Mann himself, and maybe that's the way that it was supposed to be, but I couldn't get behind his depressed mindset. And hooboy that inner reveal on the last page didn't help.I love this story. I'll most likely read the second book. The characters weren't lovable, but I'm sure they weren't supposed to be.
Do You like book Dead Mann Walking (2011)?
Pretty good. Shows zombies in a better, and much less gorey light than most.
