You can't help but think of Atwood's Handmaid's Tale (which I loved many years ago) when you read the description. So I wanted to like this. But something with the narrative voice left me disengaged rather than caught up in the story. Yes it brought up important issues: control of female reproduction, self-sustainable agriculture, large governments vs. fiefdoms. But the book just left me cold. The only word I can use to describe it is disappointment. Overall, I enjoyed this book. The story was interesting, though I felt a disconnect from the main character - which could have come from many aspects. A part I found truly interesting and pleasing was how the author skipped over a few sections as if "data" had been lost. It was a nice way to jump ahead in the story instead of dragging on. I'm not sure if I will seek out another of this author's stories.
Wow, I just realized I hadn't reviewed this yet. What a great book, worthy of becoming a classic.
