About book De Uitverkoren Magiër (2010)

I really liked this fantasy novel with its tortured father/son relationship. A father so controlling in his love for his son, so intent on keeping him safe, that instead of setting him on the path to true independence, he almost forces him into rebellion.Asher hates his own magegift of weather-working and is intent on keeping his own son's powers within "safe" limits. But the land of Lur is changing - battered by vile weather, convulsing with tremors, dying - and Asher pours himself out sacrificially to save it from falling to destruction. But all he buys is ten years... before the situation is suddenly and dramatically worse.Although I had not read the earlier books in this series, there was nonetheless a sense of seismic change in the characters. The bitter, obsessive edges to both Asher's character and that of his wife, Dathne, were interspersed with brilliant flashes of the youthful idealism and innocence they must have once possessed. The pain of the parents is transmuted into the pain of the children, chafing against both the bindings on the magecraft they have inherited and their parents' beliefs about that power. Rafel's boyhood nemesis Arlin has, by contrast, a bitter obsession that seems, in its own way, less unpleasant. Villain as he is, it's to be expected of him. The bitter obsession of the heroes doesn't make them seem more human, just less heroic.Loved the cliffhanger, however. Went straight out to look for the next in the series. This is the third book I have read by Karen Miller, I think she is very creative. The Prodigal Mage was hard for me to get through but once I got to a certain point it went really quickly. I do have some qualms about the character development though...< I don't like the relationship between Rafel and Deenie. Rafel was very mean to her and instead of trying to listen to her he would always just call her a coward, it seemed as though he had no love for her. Deenie on the other hand loved her brother and it is obvious, I just don't understand why she put up with his abuse, well, not abuse necessarily but indifference may be the better term. />
