About book De Beat Generation: Een Geïllustreerde Geschiedenis (2012)
Pocas veces he necesitado tanto tiempo para leer un comic (no creo en el termino "novela gráfica", menos en "Graphic History" como aparece en la portada de este libro). Y pocas veces me ha producido tanto tedio. Estuve a punto de desertar, pero por inercia o por una disciplina mal dirigida logré terminarlo.En las historias principales Harvey Pekar intenta abarcar la vida de Kerouac, Ginsberg y Burroughs en muy pocas páginas, el resultado es una serie de viñetas inconexas y sin desarrollo, datos narrados de una forma simple y conservadora. Si en estas historias todo es bastante apresurado, ni que decir del resto, donde en dos o tres páginas se pretende contar algo de los beats menos conocidos.Gráficamente "The Beats" tampoco resulta atractivo, los dibujos de Ed Piskor, sin ser malos, no logran compensar el mal texto de Pekar. Peter Kuper y Mary Fleener arriesgan un poco mas en las paginas sobre Gary Snyder y Diane Di Prima, logrando por momentos contrarestar la desidia narrativa de Pekar. Lo más rescatable, tal vez lo único, es "Beatnik Chicks", escrita por Joyce Brabner, insinúa la cruda historia de las mujeres bajo la sombra de los beats. El resto, como escribió alguien más, puede leerse en la Wikipedia. This anthology profiles several key movers and shakers of the Beat Generation. Harvey Pekar pens the majority of text with Ed Piskor illustrating in sharp black and white. Their collaboration comes off primarily as an illustrated timeline, the bulk of which centers on the lives and interaction of Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs. The second half of the book has Pekar/Piskor briefly highlighting a few other Beats whlie a few other authors and several other illustrators profile other poets, artists, musicians, and shops. While I'm not a huge fan of Beat lit (and I really don't dig poetry), I do appreciate historical graphic novels. I knew authors like Kerouac and Burroughs had dodgy pasts much like their protagonists but reading details of their lives repulsed me, primarily due to their treatment of women. On a related note, the only sections I really enjoyed were those from the perspective of woman authors and illustrators who profiled Beat women and contemplated their role in the movement. These chapters have actually convinced me to check out some other biographies and books by Jan and Joan Kerouac, Diane DiPrima, Jay Defeo, Louise Fitzhugh, and the twos male whose life choices and work intrigued me -- Philip Lamantia & Kenneth Patchen.
