This book couldn't seem to decide what it was or wanted to be. As a result it was rambling, repetitive, and irrelevant to itself. The ultimate conflict evolved slowly--which would have been fine, were it not buried beneath practically identical descriptions of Tania's band's development, relationship with John, and lackluster pages of introspection.It seems a promising idea, this mix of a courtroom drama, coming-of-age story, and ethical treatise on the essence of humanness. Unfortunately it did neither in a particularly readable fashion. And Tania herself... I felt like the "revisions" were just excuses to change her personality instead of maintaining a consistent narrator.Too many threads fell by the wayside. Too many threads should have been important but weren't.This book has a lot of potential, but I wouldn't call it worth reading. This is a sci-fi dystopia, a world where fertility has just about disappeared and humans are leasing child-like teknoids to fill the gap. Except they expire at 18 and have to be returned. And, the emotional fallout from failed leases or relinquishment is tremendous. Tania tells the tale through her diary entries. The plot hinges on her finding out she is not human and just a robot. Therein lies the question - has she developed human tendencies or is it all just programming?There's a bit of the Uglies and Unwind in here. I knocked my rating down a star for two reasons: 1. The professional musician jargon was distracting and actually took away from the power of Tania's embracement of music, imho. Too much detail about how music is played, musical notes, finding the right spot, etc. does not really give you the essence of music and how much a soul can be stirred by it. The passages that get at the heart of this are poetic and moving and don't contain that kind of detail. 2. I just did not get Zog and who he/she was/is/supposed to be. I thought one thing throughout the story, but then at the end it got turned on its head, and I wasn't sure at all. I felt I should have been more sure by the last sentence. Maybe I am just dense.In any case, it was a good read!

I almost gave up on this about 1/3 into it. Glad I stuck with it. Interesting and different.
