About book Das Siebte Kind (2011)

Maybe two stars is too harsh, because there were times that I was genuinely interested in Valeur's novel and cared about what happened. It gives an interesting narrative about adoption, sensationalism, and the lengths people will go to to protect their secrets. It's a story of longing to find one's roots in a way that many Americans likely don't think of when faced with the topic of origin. However, it's a long book. I didn't know how many pages there were, but it took me months to finish reading it. And part of the reason why it's so long is because there is a lot going on with the story outside of the "Kongslund Affair" and the media's portrayal of it. It crosses too many genres and creates too many stakeholders in the Affair. It wasn't awful. But it disappointed me. I was interested in the answers that weren't answered until late in the story, and it just created more questions that went unanswered. I like having answers, and if I had known I wasn't going to get many, I probably wouldn't have made this selection. I enjoyed this book very much. I had a suspicion about some things throughout the book, but it wasn't so obvious that I felt like I was cheated out of a surprise ending. I read some reviews saying that they thought it was boring, so I started it with the notion of releasing myself of any guilt if I quit before I finished reading it. I never felt in the least tempted to quit reading before the end, though. It was quite enjoyable.
