This is the second is in the three book saga about a founding family in New Zealand. It is a fascinating history and the characters and events are interesting. However, I didn't really like most of these characters much which was disappointing. No one seems to handle events appropriately and things fall apart quickly for both girls of this generation, Elaine and Kura. Worth reading for historic fiction fans, especially is you are interested in New Zealand which is a fascinating and beautiful place. I received Sarah Lark's Song of the Spirits as a First Reads giveaway. Song of the Spirits is the second book in a series. I had to read the first novel, In the Land of the Long White Cloud, before embarking on the sequel. Sarah Lark's saga takes readers to colonial New Zealand and gives a glimpse of life on cattle ranches and in mining towns. The story depicts two cousins, who have an adversarial relationship, as they take their life journeys. Initially, I was somewhat disappointed in Song of the Spirits. The first novel had so many interesting and robust characters. I can understand perhaps why the author wanted to have them take a back seat to have the newer characters develop. The story did not seem as rich. However, the story began to gain steam and there were more plot twists to keep me hooked and the characters became more robust as the novel progressed. The author painted a vivid landscape of the country and gave context by adding elements about the Maori culture. Wonderful writing.
