So, I'm giving this a somewhat reluctant 4 stars. This is a collection of Hiaasen's columns from The Miami Herald. The positive - columns are well-written and humorous while starkly true and cutting. The reluctance comes from the fact that many of the columns chosen are repetitive, and the fact that the book jumps around as far as dates go is a bit annoying. This is not a book to sit down and read over the course of a few days. This is a book best savored a few columns at a time over a period of months. Great book to take to work and read during your lunch break. After reading several Hiaasen novels, I checked him out as a columnist with this book. If you're a conservationalist and know something about Florida, you should like it. If you're a Democrat, you should like it. If you appreciate sarcasm and artful use of vocabulary (particularly in the area of putdowns) you'll like it. The subject matter can be depressing/discouraging because a lot of it takes place during Florida's "paving everything over" era. I laughed all the way through it though. A bonus - the audio version is voiced by Arte Johnson.
One of the best consistently good columnists though he's even better known as a great fiction writer
