About book Cultura De Honor (2011)

There were so many good things about this book that I can't even figure where to begin! The Culture of Honor is something we need to cultivate in our churches. It permeates everything from the structure of the church to our individual lives. Instead of leaders trying to motivate and convince people to honor one another they are the ones initiating, displaying, and inspiring honor in their culture. And Silk points out that in order to create and sustain this culture we must honor even people we consider to be the least, people who have messed up. Following Jesus means honoring, showing worth and compassion, to people who would be considered sinners by the "Pharisees". It's means not trying to control or punish people, but showing them grace and calling out the best that God sees in them. It means empowering people to own their mistakes and clean up their messes. It means serving others, even people that don't seem to deserve it. These ideas might seem odd to a lot of people, and if you're thinking to yourself "yeah, that's great, but what about..." then this book is for you. Or if you're already on board but don't know how to do it then this book is for you too. In fact, I recommend it to all Christians, regardless of what you think about this idea or how it might sound. My review and short explanation doesn't do it any justice. I think at the very least you will be challenged and most likely find yourself desiring this kind of culture. This book is awesome. It challenges the western church's emphasis on teachers and pastors and argues for a more balanced view of apostles, prophets, teachers, pastors and evangelists; the five fold ministries. Silk explains that we need to hold these five ministries with equal validity rather than placing an emphasis on teachers or pastors as the western church has mostly done. This is crucial to our understanding and practice of church leadership. Conservatives will struggle with this view as teaching is heralded as the holy grail in such churches. However, it is vital that we return to a kingdom minded approach to the gospel and this is what Danny Silk is encouraging. You must read this book if your are interested in church leadership.
