Normally I'm pretty open minded as far as love stories and unconventional couples. However I just couldn't get into this pairing. The main character is fairly young, while the love interest is a former friend of his father and is initially referred to as 'Uncle'. It's not the age gap that bothers me but the fact that it was formerly a more paternal relationship. Other people have obviously not been bothered by this and the world building seemed interesting but I just couldn't get through this. Coyote’s Creed is the first book by Demont I have read and it won’t be the last. In fact I will begin reading the second in the series as soon as I finish this review. I was uncertain near the beginning as the action was a bit awkward but soon the occasional floundering of the MC, Spencer Crain, became integral to his believable development. Befitting to his coming of age and emerging powers/awareness of his supernatural heritage and the surrounding drama he is soon immersed in. The setting Demont creates is rich and multidimensional. He references mythology and past worlds is such that the juxtaposition with present reality seems plausible. This is handled largely though the intelligent and witty humor of the internal dialogue which characterized Spencer Crain. Spencer’s frequent TV trop references throughout the story were a lot of fun. Add to that the quirky sometimes self- deprecating humor of the MC, including a fear of zombies had me often laughing in my head and out loud. I’m a slow reader yet this book only lasted me a day and a half as I had a hard time putting the book down for the mundane things like sleep or dishes. In short this was a terrific read and I doubt my home will be fit for company any time soon as I am on to book 2.
More like a three and a half. Enjoyed the main character's voice. Might check out the second one!
