This novel had an interesting premise and characters which unfortunately petered out by the end. Three unemployed roommates are evicted from their apartment and told to take the couch (even though it had been there when they moved in). they discover that the couch has a will of its own, manifested by becoming lighter or heavier depending if you are going the right direction.They end up on a quest to take it to its destination, without realizing it will require them to go to the Andes and wander around Ecuador while being chased by mysterious 'bad guys' who want to hijack the couch.I enjoyed most of the book until the last bit staggering around the Andes where it lost some focus. This is the book that Benjamin Parzybok was meant to write. Not that I knew of Benjamin Parzybok before I read it; I'm glad I do now. This novel is an original take on the classic journey/quest story, presenting surreal situations with such homely detail that they come across as almost uncomfortably real at times, so that the reader accompanies the character, with an almost palapable pebble in the shoe. The publishing house from whence this book came, and Benjamin's web presence will provide further reading.
This was much better than I expected. A quick read, with just enough fantastic elements to be fun.
