Just like Chin's book, Redwoods, this story provides facts and information about coral reefs and the ocean, while the illustrations depict a girl who, in essence, becomes a part of the library book, exploring the coral reef. Back matter is creatively displayed and has a section on the threat to coral reefs, coral reef diagram, the relationship between corals and algae, more fun facts, and an author's note. The endpages also show sketches of different species found in the coral reef. Great book to teach author's craft! Coral Reefs is a NSTA award-winning book. Jason Chin's amazing illustrations show the main character, a little girl, pictured reading Coral Reefs while the reader is. As the reader progresses further into the book, the little girl gets to experience what information is described in the text. She gets to see the coral reefs, what plants and animals benefit from it, and experience how the food chain works. In the end she learns how the coral reefs are full of different relationships. Many relationships between predator and pray, and other relationships that are partnerships. But all of those relationships make the coral reefs some of the most complex ecosystems in the world. The illustrations are bright and fascinating. I would recommend reading this book if you are learning about the ocean or coral reefs.
