Just reread this again for a second time. This man was brilliant and a pillar of patience. He had great sensitivity, compassion, and understands the importance of unconditional love. These letters share an honest and real portrait of a man who understood sincerity means nothing without integrity. I shall read and reread over and over again and again. It reconfirms my faith and belief that there are kind people who hold onto their passions and tenets, surpass all odds, and make their dreams into a reality. Still, it’s disappointing. This is original primary-source material, but it is heavily redacted. Ruth First, in editing that 1965 collection, deleted a paragraph from a 1956 article of Mandela’s that described the benefits of his political movement’s platform for the African middle class—it was deemed too bourgeois. Now a paragraph has bloomed to whole sections of his life. Most of the materials are excerpted. Sometimes it is comical, with a letter being reduced to just a fragmentary sentence or two.
