An absolutely outstanding book! I have read two other histories of the Congo but this one was easily the best. David Van Reybrouck amassed an impressive collection of research, both from documents and personal histories. There were several well done chapters about the colonial years. Van Reybrouck gives a candid, brutal look at how the Belgian's misused their authority in the Congo and disturbing atrocities perpetrated on the natives. Of course the Congolese were desperate for freedom and ended up dissolving the colonial relationship long before they were ready for self governance. Since that time the Congo has been "ruled" by one group of corrupt dictators after another; Congolese government officials seem, for the most part, to be in it to line their own and their family's and friend's pockets. The author does a masterful job of documenting the years under Kasavubu, Mubuto, Kabila, and many local warlords. For most of these years the Congo has been embroiled in one civil war after another. It was also interesting to read about the roles of pop stars and religious leaders in the political process. Unfortunately the international community (both East and West) have been more interested in robbing the Congo of their amazing reserves of natural resources than actually helping the country rebuild and move towards good governance. Overall this was a depressing though very well presented history of a very troubled land. Unfortunately the situation seems unlikely to change in the near future. Dit is zo'n boek waarvoor vijf sterren bedacht zijn. Prachtig gedocumenteerd en aangevuld met unieke persoonlijke belevenissen. Ik heb keihard gelachen, met name om de beschrijvingen van de eerste ontmoetingen tussen blanken en Congolezen, maar je raakt ook diep onder de indruk van hoe verscheurd dit land is. Verschrikkelijk toch wat voor rol wij westerlingen hebben gespeeld in onze voormalige koloniën, maar even schrijnend is hoe veel van deze voormalige koloniën er maar niet in slagen om zich te ontdoen van de grillen van dictators en stammenoorlogen. Aan de andere kant wordt een prachtig beeld geschetst van een ongelofelijk mooi en rijk land en een prachtig volk. Dat is gelukkig wat uiteindelijk blijft hangen: hoe het geluk en het optimisme van de gewone Congolees het ondanks alles wint van alle ellende, armoede en onderdrukking.

Ik lees zelden non-fictie. Het is me vaak te saai. Maar dit boek kon me bekoren vanaf het begin.
