A charming little baking memoir by Sandra Bullock's own sister, Gesine, who quit her job as a high-power Hollywood exec and pursued her dream of owning a bakery in Vermont. I enjoyed the narrative of Bullock-Prado's book and how she structured it, and some of her observations, though spoken with a somewhat opinionated bite, I felt were dead-on (I loved her response to vegans, personally). There were many of her memories I found myself nodding my head with in complete understanding - I loved the story of the 3:00 pm ritual of cake and coffee with her grandmother, because I enjoyed much of the same tradition myself, growing up. It's a fun read for anyone looking for a little more flour, butter, sugar, and eggs in their life - like yours truly - perhaps as a full-time job, but Bullock-Prado doesn't exactly sugar-coat it either: she rather emphatically states that it is hard work. That said, she undeniably feels lucky to be in her dream job - and her love of baking is evident in her words and infectious to anyone with even the slightest baking inclinations. An enjoyable, quick read with some yummy-sounding recipes sprinkled throughout. I want to attempt that plum tart... Ever dream of leaving your current profession and opening a fabulous bakery and pastry shop? Take 90 minutes of your day to read Gesine's funny account of her experience doing just that. Her story takes the reader from the vacuous daytime experience of Hollywood, as the production company manager for Sandra Bullock, to the confines of her own personal heaven, the kitchen and the sweet solitude and utter happiness it embodies. But the journey doesn't end there. Read the lurid details of a dream-baker who can't leave their bakery shop of horrors for 24 hours and who caters to quirky customers in a Vermont town befitting of a John Berendt novel. You'll walk away from this book blissfully content that you avoided such a disaster and still have her recipes to fulfill your own personal dream-state. Most notably, her story includes a whole lot of love with a dollop of an ingredient she calls douchebaggery.
