About book Comic Book Tattoo Special Edition (2008)

Okay, first of all, it's a big book. Literally. And it's filled with all these cool illustrations. When I stared reading it I was kinda disappointed, I expected much more than a big shiny book. And as my interpretations of Tori Amos songs are not as close to those in the book I didn't think I'd like it by the end. BUT, some stories are funny, some are just interesting while some are, well, not so good. All in all, I liked it. Tori Amos temple, huh? As a fan, how could I not like it? Anyways, I still think it would be much better if Neil had written it. Oh well. Four stars! This book will give you wikket bad paper-cuts, if you aren't careful! It's all glossy, dense, beautiful, wonderful pages of graphic shorts based on the lyrics of Tori Amos, whose prolific catalogue and quirky personality lend well to this project. Many of her songs don't have one specific topic or interpretation, and make a good departure point for storytellers to bring us tales of drama or whimsy or lush, under-your-skin fantasy. Some of the stories are a bit more 'straightforward', they make their point and end quietly. Some of them are heavy-handed interpretations, with dialogue stilted around an attempt to include as many direct quotations of the lyrics as possible. Many, many more of them, though, are written and drawn by true Tori fans, who include allusions and easter eggs and symbols that likeminded fans will come across with delight and appreciation. A lot of my favorite songs were told in ways I never would have imagined, though some of them were even better for that. I think my favorite symbiosis of 'song I love' and 'beautiful comic' was probably "Snow Cherries From France", though I also loved the stories from "Jackie's Strength", "Little Amsterdam", "Cornflake Girl" and "Caught a Lite Sneeze". I finally gave up on flipping through this tome and read it cover to cover a week ago, and I feel better prepared to pick it through later when showing it to others.
