About book Comet's Tale: How The Dog I Rescued Saved My Life (2012)

I picked this book up for a few reasons: 1) it was a dog book that looked like it had potential, 2) it is published by Algonquin Books, which always seems like a good sign to me, and 3) we have it on bargain in the bookstore where I work. Still, I was a little nervous that it would not live up to my expectations and hopes for it.The book is a memoir by "Wolfie" (the author's nickname) who had spinal issues that radically changed his life and his struggles with that physiological state. The book is also about Comet, a retired Greyhound who was rescued by Wolfie despite being, seemingly, the least adoptable of a group of Greyhounds. This is the story of how the two overcame obstacles, against the odds, and how they came to be an inseparable pair. At a time when Wolfie needed a service dog, Comet stepped up to the task - no matter how unlikely it might've been for a greyhound to perform these particular duties. The story is beautifully and honestly done. Comet was an inspiration, to be sure, but so was the author who managed a rebirth after a certain surgical procedure - a rebirth not just physically but spiritually as well. In the end, I learned much about greyhounds, was in awe of Comet, and inspired by Wolfie, and especially his eventual determination to turn his life around. A very enjoyable read! I own greyhounds so I was interested in reading this book. The writing is just so-so. I kept wondering when Mr. Wolf would recognize that he needed some mental health therapy. But I loved the story of Comet. So greyhound!I have 2 6 year old brothers that I've had since they were 2-1/2. They love people - I mean love people. So I was happy to read it. I might have given it another 1/2 star if there were such a thing.
