About book Chicken Said "Cluck!" (My First I Can Read Books) (2008)

I think this book is great for small children just beginning to read. The words in the book are repetitive and help them with learning and recognizing the words. The illustrations are bright and tell the story along with the written words. I think you can use this book to teach young children that you need to watch and listen to your surroundings. The chicken in the story was keeping the grasshoppers away by "clucking". The kids were only worried about shooing the chicken away but in the end they need the chicken to help save their pumpkins. Genre: Controlled VocabularySummary: Two children, Earl and Pearl, decide to make a pumpkin garden when the pesky old chicken comes along just scratching the dirt and clucking around. However, the garden receives some jumping grasshopper friends and the chicken comes to the rescue, banishing the grasshoppers from the garden with all his clucking.A: This story would be a great read for those who are beginner readers. The author has included a great deal of sight words and words that can be decoded, making it a great read for those just starting out. B: The outstanding achievement of this title is that it is a great tool for those just starting out to read. The author used a controlled vocabulary approach to ensure the text stayed at a beginners developmental level. Then one of the greatest attributes to this story was how the illustrator depicted exactly what the words on the page represented. Thus, if the student was to have trouble with a certain word they could use visual literacy to help them understand the meaning of that word. C: The author used names that were visually similar (Pearl and Earl) to name the main characters. Then there is the repetitive use of words such as "will", "shoo", and "cluck". Curriculum Connection: The teacher could have students at the beginning stage of reading complete a after reading questionnaire to gauge their understanding of the text. Questions like; "What are the names of the little boy and girl in the book? Was the chicken good or bad?, what happened to the grasshoppers?
