About book Chicken, Chicken, Duck! (2011)

Definitely a toddler book, not sure if I can pull it off as a storytime read aloud. The simplicity of the illustrations and the animal theme make it good for babies too, but I think it is best as a shared one on one story. We read it several times at home. Once I just read it through and my toddler just stopped what she was doing to stare, (and didn't move the whole time!) the other time she sat in my lap and we tried a little more interactive reading which she liked but only for a few minutes, not the whole book. This one has a nice rhyme & rhythm to it, and the animals are wonderfully individual. I especially love the chickens arabesque-ing in the stack at the end. But to get the rhythm going, I want to turn the pages pretty fast, and then the illustrations get short shrift. I think this one is good for at home, where you can read it multiple times, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, and sometimes just talking about the pictures and the animals and making lots of noise!
