Graves, Keith, (2010). Chicken Big. Chronicle Books. Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award in 2010 TumblebooksThis book had many characters so the narrator can be very animated with the voices. The pictures are very descriptive and the text is lively and upbeat. This book is about a chicken who was enormous and did not look like the other chickens. At first the other chickens were not accepting of the big chicken, but as the story reads through, the big chicken proves he is one of them. I think this story would be great to read to first or second graders to teach them that everyone is different and has different strengths and weakness, but we are all people and deserve to be treated right. I absolutely loved this book and can see myself using this in my future classroom. I went back and forth between 4 and 5 stars for so long, I figured I might as well give it the 5, because clearly it made an impact. What a cute story that children will LOVE! They will giggle and have fun shouting out what kind of creature Chicken Big really is! It doesn't really follow the story line of Chicken Little, but an acorn falls to reference that story.I highly recommend for a school, classroom, or home library. Children will really enjoy this one!
