About book Chick Days: An Absolute Beginner's Guide To Raising Chickens From Hatching To Laying (2011)

I picked this book up on a whim from the library and I am so glad I did. We have been talking about getting chickens, now that we have moved out to the boonies, but I have been more than a little hesitant. But Jenna makes it all sound so fun, satisfying and easy and now I am very keen to get started. The photos of the chickens, equipment and coop options are really helpful and the charts with information about each breed are very informative, but there are gaps and holes in her book that I will have to research elsewhere. I want to know about wing clipping - how to do it and if it is necessary. I also want to know more about predators. Who are the main offenders and how do you keep your birds safe from them? Jenna touches lightly on sicknesses but, from what I have heard, there is a lot more to keeping healthy birds than simply feeding them medicated chick starter.I guess that the purpose of this book is to encourage non-chicken farmers to try it out and to make it seem like an accessible-to-all pasttime. And indeed the book helped me warm to the idea of getting a coop going. But if you want more comprehensive information about the real issues, then refer to her reference book list. As if I'm gonna raise chickens at my apartment, but knowledge is power! After reading Chick Days: An Absolute Beginner's Guide to Raising Chickens from Hatching to Laying, I feel like I can raise chickens. I will admit I grew up with chickens on a farm as a kid, so I'm interested in raising chickens. I enjoyed the manner in which this is written, easy-going and honest. The photographs make for great visual references. I can't wait until I can have chickens. With the knowledge gained from this reading, I now know what to look for when looking for a place to live, what my chicks would need. I love eggs and would love to have chickens working on making my food. Do you know chickens can eat kitchen scraps, too. How environmentally friendly is that?!?

Do You like book Chick Days: An Absolute Beginner's Guide To Raising Chickens From Hatching To Laying (2011)?

This is the best chick-raising book I've found. I like the day-by-day and week-by-week format.

Good charts, basic info, but some of it seemed a little off. I will try Storey's.
