About book Cheap Cabernet: A Friendship (2010)

The author hops from one memory to the next, with just a bit of relativity between the two. For some reason, I really like this. It's like a stream of consciousness, but it's tightly strung and well written.Memoirs are about understanding what's in another person's head, and what in their life led them to be who they are. I think this book did a fantastic job of that, while showing the reader a perspective of a disease that often isn't seen.Throughout the entire book, there's far too many allusions to her friend dying. We get it. This is her last ____. That was something that rubbed me the wrong way. I feel like this idea could have been portrayed through a tone or emotional description, rather than stating over and over again how the clock was ticking.I consider myself to be a highly empathetic person, and I'm not ashamed to say that I cry or laugh easily when hearing another's heart-wrenching or belly-laughing story. This book has potential to grab you by the heartstrings, with a testy subject, but it doesn't. Though I really enjoyed the characters, the way that Beck finally described what happened in the end was dry and emotionless. Perhaps it was for her own self preservation to not delve in to the details that were involved in those moments, but I think of it to be a disservice to the reader. Cheap Cabernet is a truly remarkable book. It tells the story of the friendship of two women through many trials and tribulations, but it much more than that. Beck takes us on a searingly honest journey into her heart and the heart of her friend. In the process we come to see ourselves in the story. The writing is strong, the voice flawless. The narration never misses a beat. For you men who might wonder if the book is Chick Lit, don't worry about it: there's plenty of action and interesting entanglements to keep you turning the page. The book worked its way in my head until I was thinking about the story and the characters constantly. I still think about them.Cheap Cabernet is written for everyone curious about who they are in the relationships that count in their life.
