About book Charlie Bone And The Shadow Of Badlock (2000)
For me, this was the most suspenseful, dramatic volume of the series thus far. Charlie found himself in constant perilous situations, some much more severe than those in past books, and during such times, he becomes truly powerless and helpless and reaps the consequences of his involvement with and his battle against the Bloor family. Though I wish that Charlie's parents would cut their second honeymoon short in order to be home to protect their son, I realize that it is their very absence that adds such expectancy and uncertainty to the story line. Plus, the absence of Uncle Paton throughout most of the book's action does not help Charlie nor his friends much at all. I also liked the addition of once again, more characters, Matilda of Badlock, for one. The scene where Dagbert and Tancrid meet to exchange Charlie's moth for Dagbert's gold sea urchin token, and Emma secretly watches after having turned herself into a bird, might be somewhat intense for young readers, especially considering the outcome. This book also ends with a cliff hanger, and a good one at that. My kids and I are curious to find out how all of the loose ends are tied together during the final volume. Entertaining series for sure! Charlie Bone and the Shadow is the 7th book to the amazing Children of the Red King series. Charlie Bone is in trouble again, with fear that the enchanter might come back. Charlie and his friends must embark on yet another quest to try to defeat the evil at bloors and the rest of the city. If you like books with people with power, good vs. evil and that can sometimes leave you wondering, Charlie Bone and the Shadow and the rest of the Children of the Red King are for you. -JH
