I bought this book for my girls because of the little baby orange kitty on the front. Since we just got a new baby orange kitten last month, I knew they would love it. They are also crazy about dogs, so a book about a basset hound and an organge kitten at Christmas was the perfect book!To my utter delight, 3 things happened at once: 1) I was actually smitten with the drawing of the cowboy boots on the front cover and thought, "Oooooo, those look like Country Outfitter boots!". 2) I realized after I opened the book that this book was written by one of my favorite bloggers, THE PIONEER WOMAN, Ree Drummond and 3) the little orange kitty in the book was just as much of a spit fire as our little guy Stanley. The girls LOVED this book and loved looking for the hiddgen critter on each page & I loved the family edition of a favorite blogger. A great childrens book for any little one who loves, dogs, cats, Christmas or all of it! What a great find! For me, this book just was off from the first few pages. First, I have to admit that I generally do not like books where the animals, in this case Charlie, talk and I thought Charlie's comments were pretty dumb. I don't know if Ree Drummond thinks that animals are stupid or if children can't handle any level of complexity. Secondly, the illustrations by Diane deGroat were a strange mix of realism and cartoons. The people and scenes were always realistically portrayed, but Charlie was drawn in a very cartoon manner. While both were very well drawn, I found these differences very distracting. Lastly, as a animal person I really dislike books, which by the nature of their story, promote bad animal ownership. People should not get or give animals as Christmas presents. Animal ownership is a serious decision and should never be done when the family situation is in any way unstable or in an uproar like it is at Christmas time. Likewise, the new kitten should not have been walking around among the dogs without an adult's presence. I suggest parents skip this Christmas book.
