About book Centauriad #1: Daughter Of The Centaurs (2012)

I loved this book, perhaps because I love almost anything to do with horses. Sometimes the writing style was a little too self-aware for my taste, but at its best, I was reminded of The Scorpio Races. As soon as I finished reading, I ordered the next in the series. It's the first dystopia I've read in a very long time that I've seriously enjoyed, rather than tolerated or entertained. So glad I followed the impulse to buy a copy at work! (Though anything Tamora Pierce recommends immediately piques my interest.) While I actually found the premise of this story to be very unique and enjoyable, the writing style and believability of the plot were very distracting. Horses do not train that quickly and with that few problems! It did seem as though perhaps Malora was supposed to have some kind of magic that helped her, but if so, it really needed expansion and clarification. As well, particularly in the beginning, information is given, not shown, which I found rather irritating - it sounded like a list of events from an outline, rather then the finished product. A good story but the author could have used a much better editor!
