Join three cats about to enjoy a relaxing afternoon, but who end up chasing words and getting more and more confused. The clever wordplay makes it more appropriate for upper elementary grades, even though in appearance, it looks like a lower elementary picturebook. I tried reading it to my first grader and she ended up just as confused as the cats. This would lend itself nicely to be mimicked in an upper elementary language arts class after discussing homophones and homonyms. Three curious cats--Lillian, tilly, and William J.--spend a busy day chasing homonyms and homophones across the book's pages, starting with "kitty chews"/"choose a spot" (unpaged). I really enjoyed the word play and the fun the felines were having, even while they became discombobulated and had to start anew, beginning this time with "tale"/"tail" (unpaged). The brightly-colored illustrations were created with acrylic painted textures and paper cutouts combined digitally. My favorite page shows the three cats' tails as they head off for more word play fun. This is a cleverly-written book is perfect for a read aloud and useful for many writing lessons.
