About book Captain Nobody (2009)

Captain Nobody is about a boy named Newt Newman. Newt and his friends JJ and Cecil have big plans for Halloween. They plan to surprise each other with great costumes instead of wearing old hand-me-downs. Newt’s popular older brother, Chris, is the star quarterback on the high school’s football team. Near the end of the big rivalry game Chris gets knocked into a coma. Now Newt is struggling to find a good costume while he has to take care of himself since his parents are almost always at the hospital. The night of trick-or-treat he makes a great superhero costume out of Chris’s old jerseys. When someone asks about the initials C.N. (Chris Newman) on his costume, he says they stand for Captain Nobody. Newt feels confident in his costume so he keeps wearing it even after Halloween. Captain Nobody starts to “save” people. He even helps stop a robbery, but how will he save Chris? This is a decent book. This was not my favorite book, but I did enjoy reading it. I think most people can relate to Newt because we have all worried about a family member at some point in time. We all need to face our fears, but I think Newt conquered his fears when he climbed up the old water tower for since he is afraid of heights. In this book you really see Newt progress from a “nobody” who has many fears to a popular fearless kid. I liked the ending. I thought that the ending was creative. In the beginning of the book what he says doesn’t seem like it is foreshadowing, but it solves his problem in the end. Overall it was a good book, and I would recommend it. One of my kids has this as one of her top two favorite books of all time. It's a simple straightforward story of a boy who feels overlooked, but then becomes a hero by using that weakness as a strength. It's fun and easy to read and full of great dialogue. Unlike a lot of books the main character has a family who are in the story. Captain Nobody really feels invisible next to his older brother, but all is worked out in the end. This a great read for middle graders who totally get this theme.
