** Spoiler Alert ** Have you ever wondered about candy falling from the sky? Well in this book Lieutenant Gail S. Halvorsen seen that the German kids were going through hard times and decided since they haven't had candy in a really long time he would make parachutes with a piece of candy attached to it and would drop them from an airplane. The genre of this book is nonfiction. I thought that this was an okay book and think that it should have gave more details on this event.In the beginning it talked about how when Gail Halvorsen got out of the airplane and seen all the little kids standing at the gate and gave them a piece of gum. He knew that they were suffering cause of World War 2 since it had ruined everything. To lift the kids spirit he came up with something called 'Operation Little Vittles' that was when he would drop the candy attached to the parachutes out of his plane. He got letters and calls from candy companies like Hershey's and Life Savers offering to send him candy to help with 'Operation Little Vittles' people would also help by sending in cloth to make parachutes. When Gail Halvorsen had to move away Operation Little VIttles still continued on. I would say that my favorite part of this book was when Gail Halvorsen seen the 30 German kids standing behind the gate watching the airplane come and go and he knew that since World War 2 that the kids weren't able to have any candy or chocolate. So he felt bad and only had one piece of gum and handed it to the children and they all separated that one piece of gum out of the 30 of them and none of them fought over the piece they got and were happy with what they got. The point of view of this book is in third person. I thought that at the end of this book was good because Gail Halvorsen got other people to continue what he was doing when he had to move away.I was surprised when he would get mail that people were mad that he wasn't sending candy a by their house or if they were mad that he was doing that. I was surprised that they were doing that because that was something that he didn't have to do. He was doing it out of his own kindness and they were complaining about it and that was something i didn't understand why they did because even if he didn't drop candy by their house they could have still got candy that he dropped from the plane by going near or to the place that he did that at. When he got letters from kids that were upset that they weren't able to get any candy he would send them candy to their house so they wouldn't feel upset. Gail Halvorsen got called names like Uncle Wiggly Wings and Chocolate Uncle. He got called Uncle Wiggly Wings because when he would drop the candy from the plane he would wiggle the wings on the plane so the children knew it was him and he also got called Chocolate Uncle because he would drop chocolate from his plane. Overall i thought that this was an okay book. I thought it was okay because I felt that it basically talked about the same thing throughout the whole book and that they should've gave more details on it. Rating this book from a scale of 1-10 I would rate it an 8. I would rate it an 8 because in my opinion it got boring to read after a while even though I thought that what Gail Halvorsen did was a nice thing to do because he didn't have to do that and other people probably would have not done that or even thought of doing that. You should think abut things that you could do that'll make people feel happy or smile even its something that's little like when Gail Halvorsen gave the kids a piece of gum and they were happy with just that. Candy Bomber deserves a 5 star out of 5 star rating. The most enjoyable part, in my opinion was when Lt. Gail Halvorsen goes to Berlin. When he is there, he finds some kids behind a barb wire fence. When the kids ask for some candy, he hands them his last two pieces of his Spearment gum. Even though it was the time of the war and candy was very rare, the other kids besides the two who got the gum surprisingly didn't even fight over the gum. After reading that part, this struck me: those children has a LOT of self-control! If I were one of those kids who didn't get the gum, I definitely would have fought for at least a tiny bit of the gum, especially since I hadn't had candy in a long time. Like who wouldn't fight for some gum? Overall, it was a great book.
