About book Call The Midwife Boxed Set: Call The Midwife, Shadows Of The Workhouse, Farewell To The East End (2012)

. Stark examples of maternal health care in the East End slums of Britain during the 1950’s. A TV series, far more light-hearted than the books, has been made of Worth’s accounts. Extremely readable and often horrifying, especially the death of a young woman from eclampsia and the descriptions of the ghastly workhouses where the poor were segregated from their own families. The second volume focuses on people who were brought up in the Workhouses and how that experience influenced their future lives. An informative and interesting memoir of the author's life as a midwife in the heart of London Docklands in the 1950's. Living in a convent with nuns dedicated to this profession, we learn about the world of nuns, midwives, and mothers who gave birth under the most primitive of conditions. There didn't seem to be a cohesive narrative to the book and there was too much of a graphic description of cafe life and prostitution in book 1. The remaining books give a historical account of the rise and fall of the workhouse and address many social issue of the poor including medical rape, a ship's woman, abortion, and the effects of TB. Informative while entertaining with personal stories.
