About book Burnt Toast Makes You Sing Good: A Memoir Of Food And Love From An American Midwest Family (2014)

4.5 I received a signed copy of this book from the author in a Goodreads giveaway. I really enjoyed it! Kathleen Flinn paints such a great picture of her childhood and her family's past. Even though her family didn't have much and struggled at times, they seemed like a wonderful bunch to be around and grow up with. And all the recipes! I want someone to cook me all this food! Will be passing this book around for others to read for sure. This book grew on me. I've read other more compelling books on growing up on farms, growing up moving around, so at first, this seemed like a collection of details that didn't add much. But the experiences gained in chicken plucking and outhouses grew into some lasting Midwestern values such as "To Grandma, sunshine work meant thoughtful deeds done for others with nothing expected in return."The recipes didn't especially grab me, but I see the point now. "Feeding my grieving mother fed me, too. My father was gone, but I had not lost the flavors of my childhood, nor the lessons he left me. When everything else seemed so unsettled, the simple act of cooking saved me somehow."
