This is the first book of a new mystery series featuring LA cop Michael Gideon and his police dog Sirius - and it's pretty good. Although Alan Russell occasionally overdoes the witty banter between Gideon and other characters, there are plenty of genuinely funny lines, and Gideon's nemesis The Weatherman is creepy as hell. I enjoyed the audio version by narrator Jeff Cummings, who also narrates second book,"Guardians of the Night" (available as a free Kindle First download this month). Really interesting to read. A good sign about the book is that I was super pissed that there (as yet) are no sequels or prequels that involve the characters in this novel. The author created SUCH compelling characters (yes, I am the type of girl that roots for a K9) and two story lines that haunt me still: abandoned babies in their sweet cemetery (holy crap: tears well as I remember reading about The Saint cuddling Rose outside the morgue!) and the protagonist's relationship with the Weatherman. Only bad sign: the conclusion to the main story line (the investigation of a murdered & crucified high school student-- a climax that should've rocked the boat!) is forgettable.
fun hard-boiled detective. I am a sucker for this type of read and Burning Man did not disappoint.
