About book Brothers At Bat: The True Story Of An Amazing All-Brother Baseball Team (2012)

What do you do if you have twelve brothers in one family? You play baseball of course! The nine oldest boys of the Acerra family of New Jersey formed a semi-pro team in 1938. They competed against teams throughout the state and even in New York and Connecticut. While this book is about the Acerra brothers, the Author's Note indicates that from the 1860s through the 1940s, there were 29 teams that were made up entirely of brothers. Incredible! This is a good, readable book that makes the story of the Acerra family accessible for young readers.Reviewed by: Lisa Coleman, Youth Services, Vernon Area Public Library Brothers At Bat is a well-written biography about an entire family who during the 30s, 40s, and 50s had their own baseball team. The story and illustrations relate the importance of family especially during this historical period. Sports enthusiasts will love this book. Children in a big family will identify with the Acerra family. The artist and author’s note should not be disregarded – both relay the meaningfulness this story has to them. Have readers reach for their own meaning.
