About book Bridget's Beret (2010)

Bridgets favorite thing to do of all time is draw and paint. No movies, no dress-up, no ice cream! Drawing and painting. She created works of art to be displayed in the house, but also pictures that disappeared with the rain. To do any kind of art Bridget must have her beret on.One day her beret goes missing and Bridget doesn't know what to. She feels lost without her hat. She can't paint or draw. She mopes about for days. Her sister finally comes up with a solution. She has a lemonade stand and needs signs painted. Bridget says she'll try. After the first few strokes of the brush and she's off.Don't bother Bridget. She's painting! This is an entertaining tale about a young artist who relies on her beret for inspiration. When she loses it, she fears that she can no longer make art. I thought it was humorous to see the pictures of the famous artists wearing berets, and I thought it was wonderful how her lemonade stand signs were designed in homage to famous works of art. I was even more impressed when our girls recognized them, too. The narrative is fun to read aloud and the illustrations are terrific. We really enjoyed reading this book together. We loved the separate section in the back that depicts other famous artwork and the different techniques artists used in their creations. I really get excited about books like this that make learning about art fun.

Cute. The ideas at the end of the book on how to make art are probably one of my favorite parts.
