This is a great trilogy especially for tweens and younger teens. I could've used a bit more depth but it gives the reader an idea of the horrible, Catch-22 situation for girls and women in Afghanistan during the Taliban regime. Forbidden to leave their homes unless accompanied by a man, how can women who have no men in their family shop for food or even make money to pay for that food. Reading these books filled me with righteous anger at the way women are treated in that part of the world. Here is a book for children and young people that captured my heart. What a terrific trilogy of stories! Ellis weaves a captivating tale about two girls, Parvana and Shauzia, forced by extreme circumstances to dress as boys and earn a living for their families in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. On the one hand we glean insights into the indominable courage of Afghan girls such as these two. On the other we gain a sobering glimpse into the terrors and the poverty of life during that period. It is hard to imagine how anyone could live through such deprivation without losing all semblance of humanity. A gripping story well told.
