Timmie is a forensic nurse but due to circumstances in her life moves to a small town to work in the Emergency department where it seems nothing much ever happens.She realises though that people are dying in large numbers from the dementia unit and resolves to find out why, not least as her father had dementia and may need to go into care himself sooner rather than later. No-one seems concerned but when a shot is fired at an event things begin to change.I enjoyed this book which kept the tension going right up till the end which I wasn't expecting at all. The humour interspersed from her father and his signing of Irish songs helps to release the tension and seems true to life. From the first page, the first sentence, you know you're with an author you can trust. "Brain Dead" is funny, well-plotted, with characters you really care about. I've written that before, but seldom have I been so caught up in a character's ethical dilemma - which ultimately becomes the crux of the book. That sounds Heavy, but Dreyer handles her heroine's problems so deftly and humorously that you are pulled into caring dreadfully that she will make the right decision. All this, and a believable plot - with a chameleon thrown in for good measure. This is classic stuff.
