Darling Cruel is a character we have met before in The League series. He is a founder of the Sentella and friends with Hauk and Nykrian especially. One of the main things we know about him - he is gay. But it turns out - he is not gay.Zarya is a leader of the Resistance fighting Darling's uncle and Darling's family rule. Darling as Kere the Sentella leader who never takes off his armor has fallen in love with Zarya. The have a long term relationship but only in complete darkness. So she does not know that her dearest love is also a part of the ruling family she hates. Maris is Darling's best friend who actually is gay. Ture is Zarya's best friend - also gay. Apparently they are the next book's couple.Other characters to remember include Ryn (Darling's older half brother not in line for the throne and a Tavali pirate), Drake (Darling's younger brother and a trained assassin in his own right), Lise (sister), Arturo (evil uncle), and Zarya's sister Sorche. Nero is the Trisani prince in hiding. We have seen him before but we find out a bit more about him and his powers. He is also a cousin to Darling.This book reminds me of Archeron and Styxx. Darling has a truly horrible life. Like Styxx, he ends up being tortured during the time frame of the book. Zarya has her own problems. This book is an amazing read, but pure emotion. The physical and emotional scars that Darling has to deal with along with the heartache and torture through out his story and life are simply heartbreaking. As always I love the relationships and developments in this book especially between Darling and Maris, making it a fun read, this is by far my favorite Kenyon book with its twists and turns, with more of a look at a family dynamic and how people with do anything for family and friends.
